Diabetes is a chronic condition in which the body either cannot produce insulin or cannot properly use the insulin it produces, this leads to high levels of sugar (glucose) in the blood. There are currently 9 million Canadians living with diabetes or prediabetes. Chronic high blood sugars can have devastating effects on the body and may lead to other health problems, such as nerve and blood vessel damage (leading to amputations), vision loss, kidney problems and erectile dysfunction.
Signs and symptoms of diabetes: increased urination (peeing), increased thirst, feeling weak and tired, erectile dysfunction, cuts and bruises taking more time than usual to heal, dry itchy skin and, possibly blurred vision.
Lifestyle changes, such as improved nutrition and increased activity levels, can help prevent diabetes. Healthy changes can delay the need for medications, reduce the amount of medications needed, or slow the development of complications associated with diabetes.
If you have been diagnosed with diabetes and are having trouble managing your blood sugars or medications or you have questions about diabetes and want to learn about ways to reduce your risk, talk to your Pharmacist.
