Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a medical condition where bones become porous (thin) and weak, which decreases bone strength leading to fractures and sometimes even broken bones. Common bones affected by osteoporosis are the hip, spine and wrists.

There are nearly 2 million Canadians that suffer from osteoporosis. Osteoporosis affects both men and women. One in four women over the age of 50 has osteoporosis and about one in eight men over 50 are also affected however, osteoporosis can develop at any age. Osteoporosis is sometimes known as the silent thief because bone loss occurs without symptoms.

Around the age of 30, people start gradually losing bone mass. Not everyone will develop osteoporosis, and there are many things you can do to slow bone loss.
